Spousal and family carpooling: an ecological and economical choice

Carpooling, whether between spouses or as a family, is a common practice that has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transportation costs.

What is carpooling between spouses?

Spousal carpooling is a form of car sharing where spouses share a vehicle for travel. This can include commutingif both work in close proximity to each other. Benefits include financial savings, reduced environmental impact and, in some cases, eligibility for subsidies such as the Forfait Mobilité Durable (FMD) offered by employers. You can also benefit from the Coup de pouce “Carpooling short distance” bonus for each spouse.

Family carpooling: a practical solution

Family carpooling enables family members to share a vehicle for common journeys, offering financial, ecological and social benefits. It encourages lower fuel and toll costs, while allowing more time to be spent with the family. Effective planning is essential to get the most out of it.

The carpooling bonus: a financial boost

How can you benefit?

To encourage carpooling, the French government has introduced a €100 carpooling bonus for drivers who start short-distance carpooling from January 1, 2023. This bonus is paid in two instalments: €25 after the first carpooling trip, then a further €75 after the 10th carpooling trip, provided that these trips are made within 3 months of the first trip. Journeys must be made within France and may not exceed 80 km.

Family carpooling and bonus eligibility

Official documentation does not prohibit spouses from benefiting from the car-sharing bonus. So you can carpool with your spouse for your joint journeys and declare him or her as a passenger. The journey will still be eligible for the carpooling bonus.

However, you need to check that the driver declared between the two spouses is eligible for the carpooling bonus.
