We're often asked this question, so we'll give you the answer.
The Top
My route is not detected by the application. What should I do?
To work properly, Moovance needs a few authorizations. To see if your phone is correctly set up, you can check directly in the application settings in the “My profile” section.
Check that your geolocation is activated at the time of your journey.
If the problem persists, contact us at the following address: contact@moovance.fr
Can the application work without access to your location?
No, this is not possible. The GPS sensor measures your travelling speed, which confirms that you are travelling in a vehicle.
If you don't activate geolocation, if you deny access to your position or if there is no GPS signal, the application will not be able to detect your journey. If the GPS signal is lost during your journey, the application will stop recording only the part of the route where the signal is lost. This can happen, for example, when you drive through a tunnel.
How do I earn Mooves?
Mooves are awarded on the basis of kilometers covered on foot, by bike, by public transport or by car with an eco-driving score of over 7.5/10.
You can earn up to a maximum of 100 Mooves per week.
Each kilometer driven earns one Moove.
However, public transport kilometers (Train, Metro, Bus) are capped at 8 Mooves per day (30 km or 8 km by train bring 8 Mooves max per day).
Car kilometers with an eco-driving score of 7.5/10 or higher are capped at 1 Moove per trip and 4 Mooves per day (30 km or 4 km by car bring 4 Mooves max per day).
Mooves are credited to your wallet when you have validated your journeys for the week.
Trips must be validated to earn Mooves. Points are lost if the week's journeys have not been validated.
Remember to validate your journeys regularly to earn Mooves.
The little plus? The 1st validation of the day is rewarded with 1 Moove.
What are the essential authorizations to be granted to the app on iOS?
On iOS, the application asks for three authorizations after installation:
- Access to phone location
- Access to phone movements
- Sending notifications
Location access authorization is mandatory. On iPhones, there are three options: “never”, “when active” and “always”. Always” must be selected for the app to run in the background. If the “always” option is not selected, automatic path detection will not work.
Authorizing access to phone movements enables the application to measure your mode of movement. If it is refused, automatic mode will continue to work, but you won't be able to benefit from all the app's features.
Notification authorization allows you to be notified when a trip analysis starts, or when a trip has been completed and the analysis results are available.
What are the essential authorizations to be granted to the app on Android?
On Android, the application asks for two authorizations after installation:
- Access to phone location
- Access to phone movements
- disable battery optimization on your smartphone
Location access authorization is mandatory. On Android phones, there are three options: “refuse”, “allow only if the app is in use” and “always allow.” Always allow” must be selected for the app to run in the background. If the “always authorize” option is not selected, automatic path detection will not work.
Authorizing access to phone movements enables the application to measure your mode of movement. If it is refused, automatic mode will continue to work, but you won't be able to benefit from all the app's features.
Some of my journeys don't seem to be detected, what's going on?
Moovance has developed a technology capable of detecting the journeys made by the user, without the latter having to take any action.
This technology is based on the phone's operating system (Android or iOS) itself, using the phone's physical sensors. These physical sensors have limitations, and may not provide the information required with optimum reliability. This is particularly true of GPS data, which is regularly absent or inaccurate.
Despite our best efforts, we cannot guarantee 100% route detection.
I'm walking but my steps don't count towards a challenge, what's going on?
Moovance's mission is to help users make the greenest mobility choices. Journeys made with little or no CO₂ emissions are therefore rewarded.
Moovance's step counter, meanwhile, counts all the steps taken, whether they correspond to a journey or not. But some steps don't correspond to journeys and therefore not to a carbon reduction. Running on a carpet or mowing the lawn, although activities performed on foot, are not mobility choices that reduce carbon footprint.
Our challenges encouraging walking therefore only count journeys, not steps taken outside of them.
My routes don't give me any Mooves, what's going on?
Mooves points are awarded according to kilometers and means of transport used.
🏆 Each kilometer completed = 1 Moove
🚍 With 8 Mooves per day maximum possible by public transport.
🚗 1 Moove per journey and 4 Mooves maximum per day for car journeys with an eco-driving score greater than or equal to 7.5/10.
☝100 Mooves maximum allocated per week.
Why the 100 Mooves limit? We need to impose this limit for two reasons:
- The first is the fight against fraud: if we didn't set limits, malicious people could use a cheating system to loop their GPS.
- The second is that we're a start-up with limited resources, and we want to keep the application free and ad-free for the user's convenience.
Do you return my personal data?
No. All the data collected is used to calculate the carbon footprint and improve the user experience, with the aim of encouraging users to reduce their CO2 emissions.
We only sell statistics related to mobility solutions, but under no circumstances do we sell user data.
Why don't I earn Mooves when I stay at home?
When we talk about the carbon footprint of mobility, one reflex might be to think that the ideal is to stay at home. No travel, no pollution.
But being too sedentary is dangerous for your health, so it's not a viable solution to encourage.
Why does a route appear at night when I'm asleep?
Moovance offers a pedometer function. The idea is to promote physical activity by counting the steps taken during the day and rewarding them with Mooves. To do this, we generate a daily record of steps taken, visible the next morning in the application. To enable the user to visualize and award Mooves, this report is presented in the same way as other journeys.
Who's behind Moovance?
Moovance is a French startup headquartered in Paris, with employees spread across the country.
We're a small team of enthusiasts who are deeply committed to Moovance's mission and the fight against climate change.
How it works
How are CO₂ emissions calculated in the application?
The CO₂ emitted is calculated for each journey made. This calculation takes into account:
- Mode of transport used
- For automobiles, the registered vehicle
- Number of passengers
The CO2 emission figures used are taken from the latest version of the Ademe database, available here:
https://data.ademe.fr/datasets/base-carboner
As indicated by Ademe, and in agreement with the French Ministry of Ecology, the data corresponding to air passenger transport do not take into account the phenomenon of radiative forcing (contrails).
For information, here are the values used:
g CO2 equivalent per km driven | Scope taken into account | |
Thermal car | 192 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Electric car | 19,8 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Thermal motorcycle/scooter | 60,4 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Electric motorcycle/scooter | 19,8 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Bike | 0 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Electric bike | 2 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Bus | 104 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Metro/train/RER | 12,9 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Scooter | 0 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Electric scooter | 2 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Walking | 0 | Scope 1 and 2 |
TGV | 1,73 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Plane | 109 | Scope 1 and 2 |
Unknown | 0 | NA |
How is my CO₂ footprint calculated if there are several of us in the car?
When you validate your journeys, you can indicate the number of passengers. If you have more than two passengers, the carbon estimate will be reduced.
Can I use the application with several cars?
When you register, you will be asked to enter your main car. This will be used to estimate your CO2 emissions and driving scores.
You can also add other cars to your garage. However, to take their specific carbon emissions into account, you'll need to enter them on the journeys they've been used on.
How can I add/delete a car in the application?
To add a vehicle, simply go to «Settings > My garage», then click on the «Add vehicle»” button below. You will be asked to select the type of vehicle you wish to add, as well as its license plate, in order to find the exact model.
To delete a vehicle, go to «Settings > My garage», then drag the vehicle you wish to delete to the left. A red icon appears, click on it to delete the vehicle.
However, it is not possible to modify an existing vehicle.
My license plate isn't recognized, or doesn't show the correct version of my car. What can I do?
The license plate enables the application to recognize your vehicle type and more accurately estimate your carbon footprint.
If the system doesn't detect your vehicle type from your license plate, your carbon footprint estimate will be based on an «average» vehicle. If the system doesn't suggest the right type of car from your license plate, click on «skip this step».
What happens if the phone loses the GPS signal during a journey?
If the phone no longer receives a GPS signal, it is no longer possible to measure the vehicle's speed. In this case, trip analysis is not possible.
If the signal is not restored 4 minutes after the cut-off, trip recording will be stopped automatically. Only the part of the trip where the GPS signal is valid will be analyzed.
What happens if the phone is not connected to a mobile network during a journey?
by analysis on a server.
In the event of mobile network loss, your journey will not be lost. The data will be stored temporarily on your smartphone, and the analysis results will be available for consultation once the mobile network has been restored.
Can I save my journeys if my battery runs out?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. If your phone is switched off, the application cannot record and analyze your journeys.
Do I need to open the application to save my journeys?
The application does not need to be open to start tracking, but the phone must be charged.
Your smartphone may alert you to background use of your position by Moovance. In this case, confirm authorization.
What should I do if my route doesn't appear in the list?
If the trip start notification appears, it means that the trip was saved locally on the phone and has not yet been analyzed. This is normal if there is no mobile network at the end of the trip. In this case, the analysis will be postponed and carried out automatically when the phone reconnects to the mobile network.
If the trip start notification does not appear, it means that the automatic detection did not work. In this case, refer to the documentation (see doc) to check that the phone settings are correct and that the battery optimization functions are disabled for the application.
My journeys have gone back to the wrong mode of transport. What can I do?
At present, journeys are automatically uploaded to the application. The application detects trains, bikes, TGVs, cars, motorcycles, planes and buses. On the “activities” home screen, you'll find a green button with “X journeys to validate”. You can click on it and validate your journeys.
However, you can modify the trip if it is incorrect. You can click on the “modify” button and choose the correct mode of transport.
Our technical team is working on improving the application, including trip detection. Your modifications help us to improve it, and we thank you for it.
Can I change a route that has already been validated?
It is not possible to modify a trip once it has been validated.
I've finished my journey, yet the notification still appears, why?
When you've finished a journey, the “Journey in progress” notification remains active on your phone for 15 to 20 minutes. This allows the application to check that your journey has been completed, and not that you're taking a break (for example, when you stop at a traffic light).
Then, your journey is brought back into the application for you to validate.
Can I create a group with my friends and family?
For the moment, this feature is not yet available in the application. However, it will be coming soon.
How do I change my username?
To change your user name, click on the little pen just above it.
You can then modify it and press the little diskette to save it.
How do I change my profile photo?
This feature is not currently available.
How sponsorship works
It's easy to sponsor someone you know:
- Click on the «Refer a friend » button in your profile or on the main page.
- The referral must retrieve the code from the referral link and enter it when registering.
You will then receive 10 Mooves and your godchild will receive 5 Mooves.
Where can I enter the sponsorship code my friend sent me?
You will find the box to enter your sponsor code when you register.
Setting
Some of my journeys don't seem to be detected, what's going on?
To enable the Moovance application to detect your journeys correctly, please check that all your authorizations are activated (go to My Profile > Click on “Manage authorizations” in the settings > Activate missing authorizations).
You should also check that your phone's battery optimization is deactivated. You'll find instructions on how to deactivate battery optimization for your phone model here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1coppyJRWkWnBh9meu63CAmYGO95q8rhP?usp=sharing
Last but not least, check that your phone's GPS position is authorized, as this is not always indicated otherwise.

I've forgotten my password. What should I do?
You can reset your password by clicking on «Forgot your password? »
I want to delete my account. What should I do?
You can delete your account and your last saved data directly in the application (Settings page).
Similarly, if the application detects no journeys made for two months, we can delete your inactive account.(Cf CGU)
How to disable battery optimization on your smartphone?
- For the application to work properly, we recommend that you disable the battery optimization functions for the application. This ensures optimum operation of the path detection function when the application is running in the background.
- This is particularly important for certain Android smartphone manufacturers such as Asus, Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi. On these phone models, the battery optimization functions are very restrictive and sometimes keep the application dormant.
- To help you get the most out of your Moovance experience, here's how to make the necessary settings in your phone's settings and by manufacturer and Android version:
Reward
What are Mooves?
Moovance's mission is to help users estimate and reduce their carbon footprint. We award points for kilometers driven with low C02 emissions, as detected by the application. Our aim is to enable everyone to choose more responsible forms of transport by tracking their journeys.
We are working to enable partners to offer discounts on their products in exchange for points.
We choose partners whose products we feel are consistent with our approach. These points have no contractual or monetary value. Nor does Moovance guarantee that they can be used with a partner.
Mooves are awarded on the basis of kilometers covered on foot, by bike, by public transport or by car with an eco-driving score above 7.5/10.
Each user can earn up to a maximum of 100 Mooves per week.
Each kilometer covered earns one Moove.
- Public transport kilometers (Train, Metro, Bus) are capped at 8 Mooves per day (30 km or 8 km by train bring 8 Mooves max per day).
- However, car kilometers with an eco-driving score of 7.5/10 or higher are capped at 1 Moove per trip and 4 Mooves per day (30 km or 4 km by car bring 4 Mooves max per day).
Mooves are credited to a wallet when the user has validated his or her journeys for the week. Trips must be validated by the user to earn Mooves. Points are lost if the week's journeys have not been validated.
Remember to validate your journeys regularly to earn Mooves, especially as the first validation of the day is rewarded with 1 Moove.
You can also earn Mooves by referring friends and taking part in challenges (they are not affected by the 100 Moove limit).

Challenge
My progress bar doesn't increase
The progress bar may not increase for 2 reasons:
- Pedometer step cards are not accepted. Moovance's mission is to help users make greener mobility choices. Journeys that emit little or no co2 are therefore rewarded. The Moovance step counter counts all the steps taken. Whether they correspond to a journey or not. The number of steps taken is not taken into account in the challenge, as these steps do not necessarily correspond to journeys and therefore do not result in a reduction in carbon emissions. Running on a carpet or mowing the lawn, although done on foot, are not mobility choices that reduce the carbon footprint.
- Your routes are not showing up. Please refer to the section «I'm having a problem with my routes» > «My routes don't show up» .
